The Shahriar Desk

Modular 3-part desk consisting of two standalone supports and a laminated plywood slab. The right support features slide-in adjustable shelving made using dados notched into the legs.

Design constraints: Material was purchased during the COVID-19 lumber price surges of early 2021. To keep costs down, this desk was designed to use mostly engineered materials.

A combination of 3/4” Baltic Birch plywood, Medium Density Fiberboard and Poplar was used. Finished with paint, Red Chestnut stain and an oil-based polyurethane.

Softwood End Table

An end table built using only softwoods. The legs were built using Pine and the tops are Douglas Fir.

The top consists of two 2″x8″ panels glued together along matching grains, then edge banded with 1″ mitered strips from the same 2″x8″s.

Stackable Clothing Shelves

A set of two stackable shelves to store clothing. Handles and tension locks were added to make them easier to move if need be.

Floating Office

Custom built-in floating shelves and desks for a home office. Featuring a pull-out insert that allows for access to shutters and a window behind the center of the larger desktop.

Finished with a low-VOC water-based polyurethane coating.

Deck Gate

A child safety gate for an existing deck, with matching hardware. The gate features self-closing hinges, a floor bolt, outwards-facing latch and a pair of hook-and-eye locks to keep the doors open.

built-in Deck Privacy screen

Deck privacy screen built into an existing deck. The existing 4″x4″ posts on one side were removed and replaced with PT 8′ spans, framed with PT 2’x4’s and painted to match the rest of the structure.

The frame was built to accommodate two 2’x4′ vinyl trellis screens picked out by the client.

Deck Resurfacing

Weathered deck with damaged planks and missing steps. Repairs were made using pressure-treated lumber and stainless steel fasteners to increase longevity.

The deck was then cleaned with a biodegradable low-VOC wood cleaner and pressure washed before applying a thick resurfacer to fill voids, paint the wood and harden to prevent both splinters and any further weathering.
